When Jared Emerson-Johnson played Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, an adventure game by American publisher LucasArts, he realised his life-long dream of becoming a music composer in gaming. “That was the gateway for me and it made me realise there are people doing really interesting work in this industry,” he says.

While sound has always featured in video games, the industry has experienced a major turnaround with cinematic music now playing a fundamental role in many single-player games. The eighth generation, a term used by fans to describe the current consoles on the market including the PlayStation 4, XBOX One and Nintendo Switch, has played a big role in this.

In an exclusive interview, the BAFTA award-nominated composer opens up about Telltale Game’s closure in September 2018, his process when writing music for games, and the impact that fans have on him.

When Telltale Games announced their ‘major studio closure’, Jared Emerson-Johnson was shocked. Despite spending a majority of his time working from his own studio, Bay Area Sound, the composer also worked alongside the video game developer on different projects.

My Top 20 Video Games Of The 2010s

The 2010s have been a fantastic decade for the gaming industry.

We’ve witnessed the end of the seventh generation, the birth and final moments of the eighth, and also the pieces being put together for the ninth generation.
