Following tough competition, Arsenal has officially announced the signing of Ivory Coast forward Nicolas Pepe for a club-record fee.
The Ivorian had attracted interest from clubs across Europe including Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, and Napoli, but it’s Arsenal that won the race for his signature. The 24-year-old joins the club on a five-year deal for a fee believed to be around €80 million.
The transfer fee surpasses the £56m that Arsenal paid Borussia Dortmund 18 months ago for Gabonese forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Last season, Pepe enjoyed a very successful with Lille where he scored 22 league goals and provided 11 assists. His performances helped Lille finish second in Ligue 1, their highest league finish in nearly a decade.
Speaking about the record-breaking transfer, Unai Emery said: “Nicolas is a highly-rated and talented winger who was wanted by many of the top teams in Europe.
Signing a top-class winger has been one of our key objectives in this transfer window and I’m delighted he’s joining.
“He will add pace, power and creativity, with the aim of bringing more goals to our team.”
